Letter: 5 May

[Marked with X denoting code = FAILED.]

Dear Mother & Father,

I thank you for your lovely letter, received two days ago. Well we are out now at last thank God – the horror of the last two days is still on me. I feel awfully lonely, as most of my pals are with Charlie, one of who, a 2nd Lt who lives at Crofton Park, will get the VC (posthumous) [i.e. 2/Lt. A.C. Montford]. I cant tell you what happened but you can guess when I say nothing about our affair. Well, well, better luck next time.

The paper states that the [‘submarine peul’ ? – difficult to read] is great. Well

the war cant last for ever, can it? My bag was 2 prisoners (lousy and with skin disease – all yellow from dugout life). I think thats about all we took. Well I expect to be peaceful till about the time I first went to Devon last year – meanwhile my leave is due soon. Love H.

Diary: Sunday 6 May: Awful rot in papers about our attack. Wrote a lot of letters. Whole Coy. out 2 miles to mobile A.V.C. Fine day. Had fine time with T.O./22 MGC (tight). Still in Ervillers.

Army Correspondence Book, 152: To: O.C. 208 Cmp. 6.5.17
